How many questions are on the GMAT?

The GMAT has 64 questions in total: 21 in Quantitative Reasoning, 23 in Verbal Reasoning and 20 in Data Insights. Each section lasts 45 minutes, so the exam runs 2 hours 15 minutes, and there is no essay. You choose the order of the sections, and you get one optional 10-minute break.

In more detail

This is the current GMAT, also known as the GMAT Focus Edition. The older edition had more questions, an Integrated Reasoning section and an essay, so any guide that lists those is out of date.

What the questions are matters as much as how many there are. Quant is all Problem Solving, with no geometry. Verbal has Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning, with no Sentence Correction. Data Insights mixes Data Sufficiency with Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis.

The test adapts to your answers inside each section, so a steady pace matters more than any single question. On average you have about 2 minutes 9 seconds per Quant question, 1 minute 57 seconds per Verbal question and 2 minutes 15 seconds per Data Insights question. An on-screen calculator is available only in Data Insights.

Step by step

  1. 1

Decide your section order and test it on a practice exam, for example the section you trust most first.

  2. 2

Take a full practice test of 64 questions in one sitting, with the optional break where you plan to take it.

  3. 3

Pace by section: about 2 minutes 9 seconds per Quant question, 1 minute 57 seconds per Verbal and 2 minutes 15 seconds per Data Insights.

  4. 4

Use the bookmark and review tools to return to the questions you guessed on.

  5. 5

Practice every Data Insights format, not only Data Sufficiency, since the section has five question types.

  6. 6

Review practice tests by question type, not only by total score.

More questions

Is there an essay on the GMAT?

No. The current GMAT has no Analytical Writing Assessment, only Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights.

Is the GMAT adaptive?

Yes. Questions adapt to your answers inside each section, which is why a steady pace beats sinking time into one hard question.
