Can ChatGPT make flashcards?

Yes. ChatGPT can make flashcards from a topic or from notes you paste or upload, and OpenAI's help center describes flashcards as a feature inside ChatGPT. The limits are accuracy and structure: you have to check every card, and a chat does not map cards to your course or track what you know. For Anki, ask for a text file you can import.

In more detail

The quick way is to paste one lecture or chapter and ask for flashcards with the question on the front and a short answer on the back, one fact per card. You can study them in the chat, or ask for tab-separated text and import it into Anki or Quizlet. Quizlet also has an app inside ChatGPT that turns a conversation into a flashcard set. For ten cards you need tonight, this is fine.

The limits are real. ChatGPT can state a wrong fact in a confident tone, and cards written from the model's general knowledge can differ from what your professor teaches, so check each card against your material. Very long uploads may be only partly used. And a flashcard set made in a chat is a one-off: by default it does not know your whole course, which concepts you have mastered, or when you should review a card again.

That is where cards from your own course material do better. If every card comes from your uploaded lectures, points to the page it came from, and is tied to the concept it tests, you can verify it in seconds and see which concepts you keep missing. Neither approach replaces the actual studying: cards only help if you test yourself with them on a schedule.

Step by step

  1. 1

Paste or upload one lecture or chapter at a time, not the whole course.

  2. 2

Ask for one fact per card, with the question on the front and a short answer on the back, and tell it to use only the text you gave.

  3. 3

Ask it to quote the line each card came from.

  4. 4

Read every card against your notes, and delete or fix the wrong ones.

  5. 5

Ask for tab-separated output to import into Anki or Quizlet, or study the cards in the chat.

  6. 6

Review the cards on a schedule yourself, since the chat will not remind you.

How StudyPDF helps

Upload your lectures, notes or textbook chapters and StudyPDF splits the course into topics and concepts. You press New material and choose flashcards, and every card is grounded in your own material, linked to the page it came from, and tagged to the concept it tests. Diagrams from your slides can appear on the cards. Each rating updates your mastery per concept, and the next deck can target your weak concepts. Decks export to Anki (.apkg) with math intact. The free plan covers about 4 materials a week, no card needed.

More questions

Is ChatGPT good at making flashcards?

It is good at turning clear notes into a quick first draft. It is weaker at checking itself, so treat every card as unverified until you compare it with your material. For a whole course, you also need a way to track what you have mastered, which a single chat does not do by default.

Can ChatGPT make flashcards for Anki?

Yes. Ask for tab-separated or semicolon-separated text with the question and answer in two columns, save it as a text file, and import it in Anki. Check that the fields line up and that special characters survived before you study.
