Testing effect
The testing effect, also called the retrieval practice effect, is the finding that trying to recall material from memory strengthens long-term retention more than rereading or restudying it for the same amount of time.
The reason it works is the act of retrieval itself. When you pull an answer out of your head instead of looking at it again, your brain strengthens the path back to that memory. Rereading feels easy, so it tricks you into thinking you know the material. A failed or effortful recall is harder, and that difficulty is exactly what builds durable memory.
It is the science behind active recall, and the two terms are often used together. One common mistake is treating tests only as a way to measure what you know. A quiz is not just a grade. Each question you answer is itself a study event that changes how well you remember the material next time, especially when you get feedback right after.
A medical student has two hours before bed. Instead of rereading the cardiology lecture a third time, she closes the slides and answers 40 practice questions on heart conduction, checking each answer as she goes. A week later she recalls the pathways far better than the chapters she only reread.
