1. Which chamber of the heart pumps oxygenated blood out to the body?
- A. Right atrium
- B. Right ventricle
- C. Left atrium
- D. Left ventricle
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: D. Left ventricle
The left ventricle pushes oxygenated blood through the aorta into systemic circulation. The right side of the heart only sends blood to the lungs.
2. Gas exchange in the lungs takes place in the:
- A. Trachea
- B. Bronchi
- C. Alveoli
- D. Pleura
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: C. Alveoli
Alveoli are tiny air sacs wrapped in capillaries. Their thin walls and huge combined surface area let oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse quickly.
3. Which hormone lowers blood glucose levels?
- A. Glucagon
- B. Insulin
- C. Cortisol
- D. Epinephrine
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: B. Insulin
Insulin, released by the pancreatic beta cells, moves glucose from the blood into cells. Glucagon does the opposite and raises blood glucose.
4. Complete the sentence.
The basic functional unit of the kidney, which filters blood and forms urine, is called the _____.
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: nephron
The nephron is the working unit of the kidney. Each kidney holds about a million of them; they filter blood, reabsorb what the body keeps and turn the rest into urine.
5. Which part of a neuron receives incoming signals?
- A. Axon
- B. Dendrites
- C. Myelin sheath
- D. Synaptic terminal
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: B. Dendrites
Dendrites are branched extensions that pick up signals from other neurons and carry them toward the cell body. The axon sends signals away.
6. Which of the following are functions of the liver?
Seleziona tutte le risposte corrette.
- A. Producing bile
- B. Detoxifying substances in the blood
- C. Storing glycogen
- D. Producing insulin
- E. Filtering blood to form urine
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: A. Producing bile, B. Detoxifying substances in the blood, C. Storing glycogen
The liver makes bile for fat digestion, detoxifies drugs and other substances, and stores glucose as glycogen. Insulin comes from the pancreas, and urine formation happens in the kidneys.
7. In DNA, adenine always pairs with:
- A. Guanine
- B. Cytosine
- C. Thymine
- D. Uracil
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: C. Thymine
DNA base pairing is A with T and G with C. Uracil replaces thymine only in RNA.
8. Which of the following vessels carry blood toward the heart?
Seleziona tutte le risposte corrette.
- A. Veins
- B. Arterioles
- C. Venules
- D. The aorta
- E. The superior vena cava
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: A. Veins, C. Venules, E. The superior vena cava
Veins, venules and the venae cavae all return blood to the heart. Arterioles and the aorta carry blood away from it.
9. Complete the sentence.
The organelle that runs cellular respiration and produces most of a cell's ATP is the _____.
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: mitochondrion
Mitochondria convert glucose and oxygen into ATP through cellular respiration. That is why they are called the powerhouse of the cell.
10. What does mitosis produce?
- A. Two genetically identical diploid cells
- B. Four genetically different haploid cells
- C. One larger diploid cell
- D. Two haploid gametes
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: A. Two genetically identical diploid cells
Mitosis copies a cell into two identical diploid daughter cells for growth and repair. Meiosis is the process that makes four haploid gametes.
11. A solution with a pH of 3 is how much more acidic than a solution with a pH of 6?
- A. 2 times more acidic
- B. 3 times more acidic
- C. 100 times more acidic
- D. 1,000 times more acidic
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: D. 1,000 times more acidic
The pH scale is logarithmic, so each whole number is a tenfold change. Three steps means 10 x 10 x 10, or 1,000 times more acidic.
12. Complete the sentence.
An element's atomic number equals its number of _____, and its mass number adds the _____.
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: protons, neutrons
The atomic number is the proton count, and it defines the element. Mass number is protons plus neutrons.
13. Which type of chemical bond forms when two atoms share a pair of electrons?
- A. Ionic bond
- B. Covalent bond
- C. Hydrogen bond
- D. Metallic bond
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: B. Covalent bond
Covalent bonds share electron pairs between atoms. Ionic bonds transfer electrons instead, and hydrogen bonds are weak attractions between molecules.
14. A student tests whether a fertilizer speeds up plant growth. Which of the following belong in a well-designed version of this experiment?
Seleziona tutte le risposte corrette.
- A. A control group of plants that get no fertilizer
- B. Changing only the fertilizer between groups
- C. Multiple plants in each group
- D. Giving the fertilized plants extra sunlight too
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: A. A control group of plants that get no fertilizer, B. Changing only the fertilizer between groups, C. Multiple plants in each group
A fair test needs an untreated control group, a single changed variable and repeated trials. Adding extra sunlight to one group changes two variables at once, so you could not tell what caused the difference.
15. In an experiment, which variable does the researcher deliberately change?
- A. The dependent variable
- B. The independent variable
- C. The controlled variable
- D. The confounding variable
Mostra risposta e spiegazione
Risposta: B. The independent variable
The independent variable is what you change on purpose. The dependent variable is what you measure in response.
Quindici domande ti mostrano dove sei debole.
Inizi gratis.
