Il numero di domande, il tempo a disposizione, il punteggio di superamento, il modo in cui viene stilata la graduatoria, se i veterani prendono punti in più e quanto a lungo resta valido un punteggio idoneo li fissa l'amministrazione che indice la prova. Tutto quello che stabilisce uno stato o un ente locale statunitense lo stabilisce solo lui, non una regola nazionale. Procurati il bando o il candidate handbook del tuo esatto numero d'esame e leggilo prima di comprare anche una sola guida di studio.

Quello che puoi fare senza quel documento è costruire le competenze di base, perché quelle si ripetono. Una prova scritta per un impiegato di contea e una per un assistente amministrativo statale non condivideranno le domande, ma condivideranno i tipi di ragionamento che chiedono.

Le competenze che valgono in quasi tutte le prove

Quasi tutte le prove scritte dei concorsi pubblici attingono allo stesso serbatoio di abilità generali. La comprensione del testo ti chiede di rispondere partendo da un brano e solo da quel brano, di solito una circolare, un avviso o un pezzo di manuale di procedura. Lessico e grammatica ti chiedono di scegliere la parola giusta o la frase scritta correttamente. Aritmetica e problemi restano pratici: percentuali, medie, rapporti, divisione di un carico di lavoro. Le serie di numeri e lettere ti chiedono di trovare la regola dietro una sequenza. I quesiti spaziali e di schema ti chiedono di immaginare qualcosa piegato, ruotato o montato.

Il resto del serbatoio è amministrativo. I quesiti di memoria e osservazione ti danno dei dettagli e poi ti chiedono di ricordarli con precisione. I quesiti di codifica ti consegnano una chiave e una regola e ti chiedono di applicarle senza scivolare. I quesiti di archiviazione verificano l'ordine alfabetico e numerico. Il controllo di dati ti dà due elenchi e ti chiede se coincidono, cosa che sembra facile finché non incontri una cifra invertita andando di fretta. I quesiti di giudizio situazionale descrivono un problema con un collega o con un cittadino e ti chiedono cosa faresti per primo.

Questo assaggio mette almeno un quesito in ognuno di quegli stili. Fallo d'un fiato senza appunti, poi leggi la spiegazione di ogni domanda, comprese quelle che hai azzeccato. Tratta una risposta sbagliata come un'abilità da allenare invece che come un dato da imparare a memoria. Sbagliare un quesito di controllo e uno di osservazione punta alla stessa abitudine, cioè leggere a blocchi interi invece che campo per campo.
