   Gravity is what speeds you up, so the plan has to be set before you start down. Pick the gear at the top, because a heavy vehicle may not go back into gear once it is rolling fast. Let the engine hold most of the speed and use the brakes in firm, short applications, known as snub braking, so they get time to cool between them. Riding the brakes cooks the linings until they stop working, and coasting in neutral is both unsafe and illegal in most states.

    Rollovers account for a large share of the crashes that kill truck drivers, and most of them come down to two things: a load carried too high and too much speed in a curve. A high center of gravity tips long before the driver feels anything wrong, and the trailer can go over while the tractor still feels planted. Posted ramp speeds are set for cars, so a loaded rig often has to be well under them.

    An endorsement is permission added to your license for a specific kind of load or vehicle, and each one has its own knowledge test. The common ones are H for hazardous materials, N for tank vehicles, P for passengers, S for school bus, T for doubles and triples, and X for a tank carrying hazardous materials. The hazardous materials endorsement also needs a security threat assessment, so it takes longer to get. Restrictions work the other way and take something away, for example an L restriction if you never passed the air brake test.

    The commercial limit is half the usual limit for car drivers, and a reading between 0.02 and 0.039 still puts you out of service for 24 hours even though it is under the legal limit. Refusing a required test counts the same as failing it. A first major offense such as this one disqualifies you for at least a year, three years if you were hauling placarded hazardous materials, and a second major offense is a lifetime disqualification.

Qué entra de verdad en el test teórico del CDL

No existe un examen del CDL único a nivel nacional. El test lo pone tu estado, y casi todos lo escriben a partir del modelo de Commercial Driver License Manual de AAMVA, que cada estado vuelve a publicar gratis como su propio manual del CDL. Por eso, lo más útil que puede hacer un test de práctica del CDL es devolverte a ese libro, porque tus preguntas de verdad salen de ahí. Descarga primero el manual actual de tu estado.

Qué tests haces depende de qué quieras conducir. Todo el mundo hace el de general knowledge. Añades air brakes si tu vehículo los lleva, combination vehicles para una Class A, y un test aparte por cada endorsement, como tank, passenger, school bus o hazardous materials. El número de preguntas y la nota de aprobado los fija tu estado, y el ochenta por ciento es una nota de corte habitual, así que lee la página de tu agencia estatal de licencias en vez de un número que hayas encontrado en internet.

También hay papeleo alrededor del test. Necesitas un commercial learner's permit, el permiso de aprendizaje comercial, antes de poder practicar en vías públicas, y la mayoría de estados te obligan a tenerlo durante un periodo de espera. Los conductores interestatales necesitan un certificado médico vigente en su expediente. Los nuevos solicitantes de Class A y Class B, y los que piden los endorsements de hazardous materials, passenger y school bus, también tienen que completar el entry level driver training, la formación inicial obligatoria, con un proveedor que figure en el Training Provider Registry federal.

Cómo usar esta muestra

Hazlo de una sentada y sin apuntes, después lee la explicación de todas las preguntas, también de las que acertaste. Trata una respuesta fallada como un tema, no como un dato. Si fallaste la pregunta de la baja presión de aire, no te memorices solo el número: ve y lee entero el capítulo de air brakes, porque el test pregunta la misma idea desde varios ángulos.
