1. A vehicle is designed to carry 15 passengers plus the driver. Under the federal CDL rules, does driving it require a passenger endorsement?
- A. No, the endorsement applies only to vehicles that carry more than 30 riders
- B. Yes, because it is designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver
- C. No, the endorsement applies only to school buses
- D. Yes, but only if the vehicle has air brakes
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Yes, because it is designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver
The passenger endorsement applies to a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people, and the count includes the driver. Fifteen riders plus the driver makes 16. Air brakes are a separate matter, handled by their own knowledge test, and school buses need a separate school bus endorsement on top of the passenger one.
2. Which of these should you confirm your bus has before you drive it?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. A fire extinguisher
- B. A spare set of brake pads
- C. Emergency warning devices, such as reflective triangles
- D. Spare electrical fuses, unless the bus has circuit breakers
- E. A portable can of fuel
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. A fire extinguisher, C. Emergency warning devices, such as reflective triangles, D. Spare electrical fuses, unless the bus has circuit breakers
The manual lists the fire extinguisher, the emergency reflectors (three reflective triangles, or at least six fuses or three liquid burning flares) and spare electrical fuses, which are not needed when the bus is fitted with circuit breakers. Spare brake pads and a can of fuel are not on the list, and carrying extra fuel on a bus would create a hazard of its own.
3. How should baggage and freight be secured on a bus?
- A. So the driver can move freely, riders can leave by any window or door in an emergency, and a shifting or falling item cannot hurt anyone
- B. Anywhere in the aisle, as long as it stays within reach of its owner
- C. Near the doorway, so riders can grab it quickly when they get off
- D. Wherever it fits, since baggage placement is the rider's responsibility
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. So the driver can move freely, riders can leave by any window or door in an emergency, and a shifting or falling item cannot hurt anyone
Carry-on baggage must never be left in a doorway or an aisle, where it can trip riders and block an evacuation. Baggage and freight have to be secured so the driver can move freely, every window and door stays usable as an exit, and nothing can fall or shift onto a rider. Placement is the driver's responsibility.
4. Which of these belong in the interior check before you drive a bus?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. Engine coolant level
- B. Each handhold and railing
- C. The trailer kingpin
- D. The floor covering
- E. The emergency exit handles
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Each handhold and railing, D. The floor covering, E. The emergency exit handles
The interior check protects riders: handholds and railings, the floor covering, the signaling devices (including a restroom buzzer if there is one), the emergency exit handles and the seats, which must be securely fastened. Aisles and stairwells must be clear, and the emergency exit signs and lights must work. Coolant belongs to the engine compartment check, and a kingpin is a coupling part on a tractor-trailer, not something in a bus interior.
5. Complete the sentence.
A bus may carry no more than _____ pounds total of the hazardous materials it is allowed to carry, and no more than _____ pounds of any one class.
Optionen für Lücke 1: 100, 250, 500, 1,000
Optionen für Lücke 2: 100, 250, 500, 1,000
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: 500, 100
Most hazardous materials cannot go on a bus at all. The few that may are limited to 500 pounds in total and no more than 100 pounds of any one class. Poison gas, tear gas and other irritating materials are never allowed, nor are labeled radioactive materials in the space riders occupy. Do not carry a hazardous material unless you are sure the rules allow it.
6. Complete the sentence.
On a bus that allows standing, no rider may stand forward of the rear of the _____, and a line on the floor marks the limit.
Optionen für Lücke 1: front door, driver's seat, first passenger seat, wheelchair lift
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: driver's seat
That line is the standee line, a two-inch line on the floor or another clear marker. Every standing rider has to stay behind it, so the driver keeps a clear view and room to operate the bus.
7. A rider is drunk and disruptive. When you decide to make this rider leave the bus, where should it happen?
- A. At once, wherever you are, to protect the other riders
- B. At the next intersection, so the rider can walk to safety
- C. At the next scheduled stop or in a well-lit area where other people are present
- D. On the shoulder, where no traffic can reach the rider
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. At the next scheduled stop or in a well-lit area where other people are present
You are responsible for the safety of the disruptive rider as well as everyone else. Do not put anyone off the bus where it would be unsafe, such as on a roadside or in a dark, empty place. The safer choice is the next scheduled stop or a well-lit spot with other people around. Many carriers also have their own written guidelines for disruptive riders.
8. You are pulling away from a bus stop into moving traffic. What is the safest approach?
- A. Signal and pull out, because other drivers will brake to give you room
- B. Pull out slowly so approaching drivers have time to notice you
- C. Pull out as soon as the first vehicle passes, to stay on schedule
- D. Wait for a gap large enough for the bus to accelerate and merge, and watch for poles and tree limbs as you swing out
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: D. Wait for a gap large enough for the bus to accelerate and merge, and watch for poles and tree limbs as you swing out
Buses need a large gap to get up to speed, and they scrape mirrors and hit passing vehicles when they pull out of stops. Know how much clearance your bus needs, look for poles and tree limbs near the stop, and wait for the gap to open before you leave. Never assume other drivers will brake because you signaled. Pulling out slowly makes the problem worse, since the bus stays in the lane longer.
9. A curve has a posted speed that is safe for cars in good weather. What does the manual say about driving a bus through it?
- A. The posted speed may be too high for a bus, so slow down before the curve; if the bus leans toward the outside of a banked curve you are going too fast
- B. The posted speed is always safe for every vehicle on the road
- C. Speed on curves only matters when the road is wet or covered with snow
- D. Brake hard in the middle of the curve to bring the bus under the posted speed
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. The posted speed may be too high for a bus, so slow down before the curve; if the bus leans toward the outside of a banked curve you are going too fast
Every banked curve has a safe design speed, and the posted speed is set with cars in mind. A bus is taller and heavier, so it can roll over with good traction or slide off with poor traction. Reduce speed before you enter the curve, since hard braking in the middle is itself a hazard. A bus that leans toward the outside is telling you the speed is too high.
10. Complete the sentence.
Unless the crossing is exempt, a bus must stop between _____ and _____ feet before the tracks, then look and listen in both directions.
Optionen für Lücke 1: 5, 15, 25, 50
Optionen für Lücke 2: 30, 50, 75, 100
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: 15, 50
Stop between 15 and 50 feet before the tracks. You should open your forward door if that helps you see or hear a train. After a train has passed, check that no train is coming the other way on a second track. If the bus has a manual transmission, never change gears while you cross the tracks.
11. A bus with riders approaches a railroad crossing. In which situation are you NOT required to stop, although you must slow down and check carefully?
- A. No train is visible in either direction
- B. The crossing has only one track
- C. A police officer or flagman is directing traffic at the crossing
- D. The weather is clear and the road is dry
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. A police officer or flagman is directing traffic at the crossing
The manual lists the exceptions: streetcar crossings, a police officer or flagman directing traffic, a green traffic signal, and crossings marked exempt or abandoned. Not seeing a train, having a single track and good weather are not exceptions. Without one of the listed exceptions, stop every time.
12. You come to a drawbridge with no signal light and no attendant or traffic officer. What must you do?
- A. Slow down and cross if the road ahead looks clear
- B. Stop at least 50 feet before the draw and make sure it is completely closed before you cross
- C. Stop only if you hear a bell or a horn
- D. Stop 15 feet before the draw and open your forward door
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Stop at least 50 feet before the draw and make sure it is completely closed before you cross
At a drawbridge with no signal light and no attendant, stop at least 50 feet before the draw and look to be sure it is completely closed. You may slow down instead of stopping when a traffic light shows green or an attendant or traffic officer controls traffic whenever the bridge opens. The 15 to 50 feet figure belongs to railroad crossings, which is why the two are easy to mix up.
13. For a bus driven by an interstate carrier, what is required at the end of each shift?
- A. A written inspection report for each bus driven, listing any defect that would affect safety or cause a breakdown
- B. A spoken report to the next driver, with nothing written down
- C. A written report only on days when you find a defect
- D. Nothing, because the pre-trip inspection already covered the day
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. A written inspection report for each bus driven, listing any defect that would affect safety or cause a breakdown
Inspect the bus at the end of each shift. Interstate carriers need a written report for each bus driven, and if there are no defects the report should say so. Riders damage handholds, seats, emergency exits and windows, so reporting that damage at the end of a shift lets the mechanics repair it before the bus goes out again.
14. Which of these does the manual treat as practices to avoid with riders on board?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. Announcing the location and next departure time at a stop
- B. Refueling the bus inside a closed building
- C. Towing or pushing the bus when the riders could safely get off instead
- D. Reminding riders to take their carry-ons when they leave
- E. Talking with riders while you are driving
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Refueling the bus inside a closed building, C. Towing or pushing the bus when the riders could safely get off instead, E. Talking with riders while you are driving
Avoid fueling with riders aboard unless it is absolutely necessary, and never fuel in a closed building with riders on board. Do not chat with riders or do anything else that distracts you while driving. Do not tow or push a disabled bus with riders aboard unless getting off would be unsafe, and then only to the nearest safe place to unload. Announcing the stop and reminding riders about their bags are things a good driver does.
15. What does a brake-door interlock do on an urban transit coach?
- A. It locks the front door whenever the bus is moving
- B. It sets the parking brake when the engine is shut off
- C. It releases the brakes when the rear door opens so riders can get off
- D. It applies the brakes and holds the throttle at idle while the rear door is open
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: D. It applies the brakes and holds the throttle at idle while the rear door is open
On a bus equipped with the system, opening the rear door applies the brakes and holds the throttle at idle, and closing the door releases them. It is a safety feature for stops, and it is not a substitute for the parking brake. Set the parking brake yourself whenever you leave the bus parked.
