1. A 12 volt circuit feeds a single load that measures 3 ohms. How much current flows through the circuit?
- A. 0.25 amps
- B. 3 amps
- C. 4 amps
- D. 36 amps
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. 4 amps
Ohm's law says current equals voltage divided by resistance, so 12 divided by 3 is 4 amps. Multiplying instead of dividing gives 36, and dividing the wrong way around gives 0.25, which are the two mistakes worth catching. Knowing the expected current also tells you whether a fuse rating and a wire size make sense for the circuit you are looking at.
2. Both front tires show a feathered, sawtooth edge across the tread. Which alignment angle is the most likely cause?
- A. Toe
- B. Camber
- C. Caster
- D. Steering axis inclination
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. Toe
Toe is the difference between the front and rear of the tires as seen from above. When it is off, the tire is dragged sideways a little with every revolution, and that scrubbing carves one side of each tread block down into a feathered edge. Camber wears one shoulder of the tire smoothly instead. Caster and steering axis inclination affect steering effort, straight line stability and return to center rather than tread wear.
3. Complete the sentence.
In the diagnostic trouble code P0301, the letter _____ tells you the code belongs to the powertrain, and the last two digits tell you _____.
Optionen für Lücke 1: B, C, P, U
Optionen für Lücke 2: which cylinder is misfiring, how many drive cycles have passed, how long the code has been stored, which scan tool read the code
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: P, which cylinder is misfiring
The first character sorts the code by system: B for body, C for chassis, P for powertrain and U for network communication. The digit right after it says whether the definition is generic or manufacturer specific, and the last two digits identify the specific fault. In the misfire family that number is the cylinder, so P0301 is a cylinder 1 misfire and P0300 is a random or multiple cylinder misfire with no single cylinder singled out.
4. In an automotive air conditioning system, which component absorbs heat from the air going into the passenger compartment?
- A. The condenser
- B. The evaporator
- C. The receiver drier
- D. The compressor
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. The evaporator
Refrigerant enters the evaporator as a cold low pressure liquid and boils into a vapor. Changing state takes a lot of heat, and that heat comes out of the air blowing across the evaporator fins, which is what cools the cabin. The condenser at the front of the vehicle does the opposite job and dumps that heat to outside air, the compressor raises pressure and moves the refrigerant, and the receiver drier stores refrigerant and traps moisture.
5. What does a torque converter do that a simple fluid coupling cannot?
- A. It shifts the transmission between gear ranges
- B. It holds the vehicle stationary on a hill with no brake applied
- C. It filters and cools the transmission fluid
- D. It multiplies engine torque when the turbine is turning much slower than the impeller
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: D. It multiplies engine torque when the turbine is turning much slower than the impeller
A plain fluid coupling only passes torque along. A torque converter adds a stator between the turbine and the impeller, and the stator redirects fluid coming off the turbine so it hits the impeller in a helpful direction. That extra push multiplies torque, and the effect is largest at stall, when the turbine is barely moving. As turbine speed catches up to impeller speed the multiplication fades toward one to one, and a lockup clutch then ties the two together mechanically to remove the last of the slip.
6. How is a voltage drop test on a starter cable performed?
- A. With the cable disconnected at both ends and an ohmmeter reading end to end
- B. With the circuit operating and the meter connected across the cable, in parallel with it
- C. With the meter wired in series with the cable while the engine cranks
- D. With the battery disconnected and the meter set to the continuity position
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. With the circuit operating and the meter connected across the cable, in parallel with it
Voltage drop measures resistance where it matters, under real load. You leave the cable connected, crank the engine so current is flowing, and put the meter leads on the two ends of the cable. A low reading means the cable is passing current freely and a high reading means something in that path is fighting it. An ohmmeter cannot substitute, because it pushes only a tiny test current and a corroded connection that reads near zero ohms can still drop several volts at two hundred amps.
7. A vehicle with a manual transmission gains engine rpm when accelerating in high gear, but road speed barely changes. What is the most likely cause?
- A. A slipping clutch disc
- B. A clutch that is dragging and will not fully release
- C. A worn synchronizer in fourth gear
- D. A bent shift fork
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. A slipping clutch disc
Slipping and dragging are opposite faults and they give opposite symptoms. Slipping means the disc cannot hold the torque being asked of it, so engine speed runs away from road speed, and it shows up first in the highest gear and under load because that is where torque demand at the disc is greatest. Dragging means the disc does not fully let go when the pedal is down, and that shows up as grinding going into gear or as the vehicle creeping in gear at a stop.
8. A vehicle has a stored P0300 random misfire code. Which of the following are plausible causes worth checking?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. A large vacuum leak downstream of the mass airflow sensor
- B. A clogged cabin air filter
- C. Worn spark plugs across several cylinders
- D. Low fuel pressure from a weak fuel pump
- E. A burned out license plate lamp
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. A large vacuum leak downstream of the mass airflow sensor, C. Worn spark plugs across several cylinders, D. Low fuel pressure from a weak fuel pump
A random misfire points at something shared by all the cylinders rather than at one cylinder's parts. Unmetered air, tired plugs and low fuel pressure all lean out or weaken combustion everywhere at once, so all three belong on the check list. A cabin air filter only affects airflow to the passenger compartment and a lamp is a separate lighting circuit, so neither touches combustion. If the code had named one cylinder instead, the search would narrow to that cylinder's ignition, injector and compression.
9. Which of the following are wheel alignment angles measured on an alignment rack?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. Ring and pinion backlash
- B. Camber
- C. Wheel bearing preload
- D. Caster
- E. Toe
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Camber, D. Caster, E. Toe
Camber, caster and toe are the three primary alignment angles. Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel seen from the front, caster is the forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis seen from the side, and toe is how much the wheels point in or out seen from above. Backlash and bearing preload are drivetrain and hub measurements. Of the three angles, toe is the one that destroys tires fastest, so it is checked and set last after camber and caster are correct.
10. Coming down a long grade a driver uses the brakes continuously. The pedal still feels firm, but the vehicle slows far less than normal. What is happening?
- A. The pedal linkage has stretched
- B. The tires have lost air pressure
- C. The parking brake has released itself
- D. The friction material has overheated and lost friction
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: D. The friction material has overheated and lost friction
A brake system works by turning the vehicle's motion into heat at the friction surfaces. Held on for long enough, those surfaces get hotter than the material was designed for and its coefficient of friction falls, so the same pedal effort produces less stopping. That is brake fade, and the pedal staying firm is the clue that it is a friction and heat problem rather than something in the hydraulic side. The fix on the road is to select a lower gear so the engine does most of the slowing and the brakes get a chance to cool.
11. Complete the sentence.
The three members of a simple planetary gearset are the sun gear, the ring gear and the _____, which holds the _____.
Optionen für Lücke 1: carrier, synchronizer, stator, valve body
Optionen für Lücke 2: clutch discs, band anchors, pinion gears, thrust washers
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: carrier, pinion gears
A planetary gearset gives several ratios from one set of gears because you can choose which member is driven, which is held still and which drives the output. Hold the ring gear and drive the sun gear and the carrier turns slowly, which is a reduction. Drive the carrier and take output from the ring gear and you get overdrive. Lock any two members together and the whole set turns as a unit, which is direct drive. The clutches and bands in the transmission are what make those choices.
12. Which statements about a series circuit are correct?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. Each branch sees the full source voltage
- B. The current is the same at every point in the circuit
- C. Total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances
- D. The individual voltage drops add up to source voltage
- E. If one component opens, the rest keep working
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. The current is the same at every point in the circuit, C. Total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances, D. The individual voltage drops add up to source voltage
A series circuit gives current only one path, so the same current passes through every component, resistances add, and the voltage drops across them add back up to source voltage. Because there is one path, an open anywhere stops the whole circuit. The other two statements describe a parallel circuit, where each branch gets full voltage and the remaining branches keep working when one opens. Unwanted resistance in a series path is exactly what a voltage drop test finds.
13. Complete the sentence.
A worn clutch release bearing usually makes noise while the _____, and a worn _____ bearing makes noise with the pedal fully down, the transmission in gear and the vehicle stopped.
Optionen für Lücke 1: clutch pedal is being pressed, vehicle coasts with the pedal up, engine idles in neutral with the pedal up, key is off
Optionen für Lücke 2: wheel, pilot, camshaft, output shaft
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: clutch pedal is being pressed, pilot
Both noises are diagnosed by when they appear. The release bearing only gets loaded and spun against the pressure plate fingers when the pedal moves it forward, so it complains while the pedal is down and goes quiet when you lift your foot. The pilot bearing sits between the crankshaft and the input shaft and only turns when those two spin at different speeds, which is exactly the condition you create by holding the pedal down in gear at a standstill. Noticing which pedal position brings the noise saves pulling a transmission to find out.
14. What is the job of the oxygen sensor mounted after the catalytic converter?
- A. To set the base fuel injection amount
- B. To measure exhaust backpressure
- C. To monitor how well the converter is working
- D. To switch the fuel pump relay on and off
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. To monitor how well the converter is working
The upstream sensor swings rich and lean constantly and the engine computer uses those swings to trim fuel in closed loop. The downstream sensor should look much calmer, because a healthy converter stores and releases oxygen and smooths the changes out. When the downstream signal starts to mirror the upstream one, the computer decides the converter is no longer doing its job and sets an efficiency code. Note that misfires and a rich condition can kill a converter, so a converter code is often a symptom of something else rather than the whole story.
15. In a four stroke engine, which is the correct order of the strokes?
- A. Compression, intake, power, exhaust
- B. Intake, compression, power, exhaust
- C. Intake, power, compression, exhaust
- D. Exhaust, intake, power, compression
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Intake, compression, power, exhaust
Intake draws the air and fuel charge in, compression squeezes it with both valves closed, the power stroke is the only one that drives the crankshaft, and exhaust pushes the burned gases out. The whole cycle takes two crankshaft revolutions, and since each valve opens once per cycle the camshaft turns at half crankshaft speed. That two to one relationship is why cam timing has to be set with the crank at a known position.
16. Technician A says an engine compression test should be done with the throttle held wide open. Technician B says that squirting a little oil into a low cylinder and testing again helps show whether the rings or the valves are leaking. Who is right?
- A. A only
- B. B only
- C. Both A and B
- D. Neither A nor B
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. Both A and B
Both statements are true. A closed throttle lets less air into the cylinders and gives a falsely low reading, so the test is done with the throttle wide open, all the spark plugs out and the engine cranked. In the wet test the oil briefly seals the rings. If the reading jumps, the rings were leaking, and if it barely moves, the leak is past the valves or the head gasket. That one extra step keeps you from tearing down the wrong half of the engine.
17. The oil on the dipstick looks like milky coffee, and the coolant level keeps dropping with no puddle under the car. Which is the most likely cause?
- A. A stuck PCV valve
- B. A worn rear main seal
- C. A faulty fuel pressure regulator
- D. A leaking head gasket
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: D. A leaking head gasket
In a healthy engine, coolant and oil never share a passage. When coolant gets into the oil it whips into a milky sludge, and the coolant level falls with no outside leak to explain it. That points at an internal leak such as a failed head gasket or a cracked head or block. A stuck PCV valve can leave some moisture in the oil in cold weather, but it does not use up coolant. A rear main seal leaks oil outward, and a fuel pressure regulator has nothing to do with the cooling system.
18. Complete the sentence.
If a timing belt skips a tooth, the _____ changes, and on an interference engine the _____ can then hit the pistons.
Optionen für Lücke 1: valve timing, oil pressure, coolant flow, fuel pressure
Optionen für Lücke 2: valves, spark plugs, head bolts, injectors
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: valve timing, valves
The belt links the crankshaft to the camshaft, so a skipped tooth shifts the cam against the crank and the valves open and close at the wrong moments. In an interference engine an open valve and a piston travel through the same space, so bad timing lets them collide and bend the valves. A non interference engine has enough clearance that the same failure only stops the engine. That is why a timing belt on an interference engine is replaced on schedule and not run until it breaks.
19. Why is automatic transmission fluid usually checked with the engine running and the fluid warm?
- A. The pump has filled the torque converter and the passages, and the fluid is at its working temperature
- B. The dipstick only reads correctly while the lockup clutch is applied
- C. Cold fluid is too thin to leave a mark on the dipstick
- D. The engine has to run to burn off moisture in the pan
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. The pump has filled the torque converter and the passages, and the fluid is at its working temperature
With the engine off, fluid drains back from the converter and the passages into the pan, so the dipstick reads higher than the level the transmission really works with. Cold fluid also reads lower than hot fluid because it takes up less room. Checking with the pump running and the fluid at working temperature shows the level that matters. The exact procedure, including the gear selector position, comes from the manufacturer, and many newer transmissions have no dipstick and use a check plug instead.
20. A front wheel drive car makes a repeating clicking noise in tight turns, and the clicks come faster as the car speeds up through the turn. Which part is the most likely cause?
- A. A worn inner CV joint
- B. A worn clutch release bearing
- C. A worn outer CV joint
- D. A worn pinion bearing
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. A worn outer CV joint
The outer CV joint sits at the wheel and bends through its largest angle when you steer, so that is where wear shows up as a click in a tight turn. An inner joint mostly slides in and out and bends less, and a worn one tends to show up as a shudder or vibration under acceleration. A release bearing or a pinion bearing does not change its sound with the steering angle.
21. A car pulls to one side on a flat road with no braking. Which of the following can cause it?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. Unequal tire pressure from side to side
- B. Unequal camber from side to side
- C. A dragging brake caliper
- D. Worn wiper blades
- E. A clogged cabin air filter
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. Unequal tire pressure from side to side, B. Unequal camber from side to side, C. A dragging brake caliper
A pull means the two front wheels are not working equally. A softer tire has a smaller rolling diameter, so the car drifts toward it. Unequal camber makes the car lean toward the side with more positive camber, and a dragging caliper slows one wheel and drags the car that way. Wipers and the cabin filter have no connection to steering or the wheels. Checking tire pressure first costs nothing and rules out the most common cause before anyone touches the alignment.
22. Complete the sentence.
A shock absorber or strut controls spring _____, and when it is worn the tires often show _____ wear.
Optionen für Lücke 1: alignment, bounce, steering ratio, brake balance
Optionen für Lücke 2: feathered, center, cupped, inside shoulder
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: bounce, cupped
A spring on its own keeps bouncing after a bump. The shock damps that motion so the tire stays in firm contact with the road. When it wears out the tire hops as it rolls, lands in the same spots again and again and wears into scalloped, cupped patches around the tread. Feathering points to toe, wear down the middle points to over inflation, and wear on one shoulder points to camber.
23. Technician A says brake fluid slowly absorbs moisture from the air. Technician B says moisture in the brake fluid raises its boiling point. Who is right?
- A. A only
- B. B only
- C. Both A and B
- D. Neither A nor B
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: A. A only
Most brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it takes in water over time through the hoses and the reservoir vent, so Technician A is right. Water does not raise the boiling point, it lowers it. When the brakes get hot, water in the fluid can boil into vapor, and vapor compresses where fluid does not, so the pedal goes soft. That is why brake fluid is replaced on a schedule and can be tested for moisture.
24. A technician holds steady pressure on the brake pedal and the pedal slowly sinks toward the floor. There are no external leaks and the fluid level stays normal. Which is the most likely cause?
- A. A failed vacuum check valve
- B. A master cylinder with worn piston seals that leak internally
- C. Worn brake pad lining
- D. Low tire pressure
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. A master cylinder with worn piston seals that leak internally
A pedal that sinks under steady pressure means fluid is slipping past something that should hold it. With no outside leak and a steady reservoir level, the fluid is bypassing the worn piston seals inside the master cylinder. A failed vacuum check valve or a booster problem makes the pedal hard, not sinking. Worn pads lower the fluid level over months but do not make a pedal sink while you hold it, and tire pressure has no effect on the pedal at all.
25. How is an ammeter connected to measure a parasitic draw on a parked car?
- A. In parallel across the battery posts
- B. In series with the battery cable, after the modules have gone to sleep
- C. Across the starter solenoid with the key on
- D. In series with the alternator output
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. In series with the battery cable, after the modules have gone to sleep
An ammeter has to sit in the path of the current, so it goes in series, usually between the battery post and its cable, with everything off and the doors closed. Many modules stay awake for a while after the key is off, so wait until the reading settles before you judge it. An ammeter wired in parallel across the battery is a short circuit with a meter in it. If the draw is above what the manufacturer allows, pull fuses one at a time and watch which one makes the reading fall.
26. A series circuit has unwanted high resistance at a corroded connector. Which of the following happen?
Wähl alles aus, was zutrifft.
- A. Current through the load increases
- B. Less current flows in the circuit
- C. Some of the voltage is lost across the corroded connector
- D. The source voltage rises
- E. The load receives less than its full voltage
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. Less current flows in the circuit, C. Some of the voltage is lost across the corroded connector, E. The load receives less than its full voltage
Extra resistance anywhere in a series path adds to the total, so by Ohm's law the current falls. The connector now takes a share of the voltage as a drop, and the load is left with less than it needs, which is why a dim headlight can be a connector problem and not a bulb problem. The resistance does not change the voltage the battery or alternator supplies, and it cannot make the current rise. A voltage drop test across the suspect connector, with the circuit on, shows the loss directly.
27. A technician connects a manifold gauge set to an air conditioning system. Both the low side and the high side read lower than normal, and the air from the vents is only slightly cool. Which is the most likely cause?
- A. An overcharged system
- B. Restricted airflow through the condenser
- C. A low refrigerant charge
- D. A failed blower motor
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: C. A low refrigerant charge
With too little refrigerant there is less to boil in the evaporator and less to compress, so both pressures drop and the cooling is weak. An overcharge or poor airflow across the condenser pushes the high side up instead. A failed blower changes how much air comes out of the vents but does not by itself lower both pressures. Find the leak before topping the system off, because refrigerant does not get used up.
28. Complete the sentence.
Before an air conditioning system is opened, the refrigerant must be _____ into approved equipment, and after the repair the system is _____ to remove air and moisture before it is recharged.
Optionen für Lücke 1: vented, drained, recovered, burned
Optionen für Lücke 2: evacuated, flushed with water, pressurized with shop air, heated
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: recovered, evacuated
Refrigerant is not released into the air. In the United States, technicians who handle it need EPA Section 609 certification and recover it with approved equipment so it can be cleaned and reused. After the repair, a vacuum pump pulls the system down, which removes air and boils off moisture, and both hurt cooling and can corrode parts or freeze up. Only then is the system charged, by weight, to the specification.
29. A scan tool shows long term fuel trim at plus 25 percent at idle and close to zero at 2,500 rpm. Which is the most likely cause?
- A. A leaking fuel injector
- B. A vacuum leak
- C. A restricted exhaust
- D. A thermostat stuck open
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. A vacuum leak
Positive fuel trim means the computer is adding fuel because the oxygen sensor reports a lean mixture. A vacuum leak lets in air the airflow sensor never measured, and a leak of a fixed size matters most at idle, when the engine draws very little air through the throttle. At 2,500 rpm the same leak is a small share of the total air, so the trim returns to near zero. A leaking injector would make the mixture rich and pull trim negative, and neither an exhaust restriction nor a thermostat stuck open creates this idle only lean pattern.
30. Technician A says a P0420 code always means the catalytic converter has to be replaced. Technician B says a misfire or burning oil can ruin a converter, so the cause should be found and fixed first. Who is right?
- A. A only
- B. B only
- C. Both A and B
- D. Neither A nor B
Antwort und Erklärung zeigen
Antwort: B. B only
A P0420 code says the converter is not cleaning the exhaust as well as it should, not that the converter is the only thing wrong. A misfire dumps raw fuel into the converter and overheats it, and burning oil coats it, so a new converter on an engine with the original fault can fail again. The sound approach is to check for misfires, fuel trim and oil use, and to confirm the sensor readings, before spending money on the converter.
So nutzt du diesen Auszug
