Dette står på GED
GED er ikke én lang eksamen. Det er fire separate fagprøver, og du tar dem én om gangen: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science og Social Studies. Hver av dem får poeng på sin egen skala fra 100 til 200, og 145 er bestått-grensen i det faget. Det finnes høyere nivåer for dem som vil ha innplassering eller studiepoeng på college, vanligvis satt til 165 og 175, men det er 145 som gir selve vitnemålet. Prøvene er verken like lange eller like formet. Science tar rundt 90 minutter og Social Studies rundt 70. Begge de to lener seg tungt på tekster, diagrammer, kart og tabeller, så en stor del av poengsummen kommer av å lese en kilde riktig og ikke av å hente et faktum fra hukommelsen.
Noen ting varierer virkelig, og det er her folk får dårlig informasjon. Delstaten din bestemmer prisen per fag, aldersgrensen og eventuelle papirer om utmelding eller samtykke fra foresatte, hvor mange nye forsøk du får og hvor lenge du må vente mellom forsøkene, og om du kan ta prøven på nett med fjernvakt eller bare på et testsenter. Noen få delstater bruker en annen prøve for fullført videregående i stedet for GED, eller tilbyr flere enn én. Sjekk den offisielle siden for din egen delstat før du planlegger ut fra en pris eller en regel du leste på et forum, for den personen kan være i en annen delstat.
Slik bruker du denne smakebiten
Disse 15 spørsmålene dekker alle fire fagene i én økt, noe den ekte prøven aldri gjør. Det gjør dette til en breddesjekk mer enn en øvingseksamen. Den er god til å finne hvilket fag som er svakest og hvilket du sannsynligvis kunne meldt deg opp til snart, og den er ikke lang nok til å si om du ville klart 145 på noen enkelt prøve.
Ta den uten notater, og prøv matematikkspørsmålene uten kalkulator selv om den ekte matematikkprøven tillater det på det meste av delen. Det skiller to ulike problemer: å ikke vite hvordan oppgaven skal settes opp, og å kunne oppsettet men snuble i regningen. De krever hver sin løsning. Les etterpå hver forklaring, også til spørsmålene du svarte riktig på, for en heldig gjetning skjuler et hull som dukker opp igjen på prøvedagen.

Siden GED bestås ett fag om gangen, kommer de fleste raskere fram ved å forberede ett fag, melde seg opp, bestå det og ta resultatet i banken, framfor å lese alle fire samtidig og ikke ta noen prøve. Samler de seg i diagram- og dataspørsmålene, er science og social studies sannsynligvis den samme svakheten i ulike klær.
