A river gave an early settlement fresh water, soil renewed by flooding and a cheap way to move goods and people. That combination is why Mesopotamia, the Nile valley and the Indus valley supported large populations long before drier regions did.
Wat er echt op de GED staat
De GED is niet een lang examen. Het zijn vier losse onderdelen die je een voor een maakt: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science en Social Studies. Elk onderdeel heeft een eigen schaal van 100 tot 200, en 145 is de slaaggrens voor dat onderdeel. Daarboven bestaan hogere niveaus voor wie plaatsing of studiepunten aan een hogeschool of universiteit wil, meestal gezet op 165 en 175, maar met 145 haal je het diploma. Omdat je onderdeel voor onderdeel slaagt, betekent een lage score op een gebied alleen dat je dat gebied opnieuw maakt, niet dat je overnieuw begint.
De onderdelen zijn niet even lang en niet hetzelfde van vorm. Language arts is het langst, ongeveer 150 minuten, en bevat een Extended Response waarin je twee korte betogen over dezelfde kwestie leest en een essay schrijft over welk betoog beter met bewijs wordt onderbouwd. Mathematical Reasoning duurt ongeveer 115 minuten en bestaat uit twee delen, een kort eerste deel zonder rekenmachine en een langer deel waarin een wetenschappelijke rekenmachine op het scherm en een formuleblad beschikbaar zijn. Science duurt rond de 90 minuten en Social Studies rond de 70. Die twee leunen zwaar op teksten, grafieken, kaarten en tabellen, dus een groot deel van de score komt uit een bron goed lezen en niet uit een feit ophalen uit je geheugen.
Sommige dingen verschillen echt, en daar komen mensen aan verkeerde informatie. Jouw staat bepaalt het tarief per onderdeel, de minimumleeftijd en de eventuele papieren voor uitschrijving of toestemming van je ouders, hoeveel hertesten je krijgt en hoe lang je tussen pogingen moet wachten, en of je online met een surveillant op afstand examen kunt doen of alleen in een testcentrum. Een paar staten gebruiken een andere equivalentietoets in plaats van de GED, of bieden er meer dan een aan. Kijk op de officiële site van je eigen staat voordat je plannen maakt rond een prijs of een regel die je op een forum las, want die persoon kan in een andere staat zitten.
Hoe je deze oefentoets gebruikt
Deze 15 vragen dekken alle vier de onderdelen in een keer, iets wat het echte examen nooit doet. Daarmee is dit een breedtecheck en geen oefenexamen. Het is goed om te zien welk onderdeel het zwakst is en welk onderdeel je waarschijnlijk snel kunt inplannen, en het is te kort om te zeggen of je op een los onderdeel de 145 zou halen.
Maak hem zonder aantekeningen, en probeer de wiskundevragen zonder rekenmachine, ook al mag je die op het echte wiskundeonderdeel voor het grootste deel wel gebruiken. Zo scheid je twee verschillende problemen: niet weten hoe je de som opzet, en de opzet wel weten maar uitglijden op het rekenwerk. Die vragen om verschillende oplossingen. Lees daarna elke uitleg, ook bij de vragen die je goed had, want een gelukkige gok verbergt een gat dat op de examendag terugkomt.
Gebruik je missers daarna om te kiezen wat je hierna doet. Omdat je de GED onderdeel voor onderdeel haalt, gaan de meeste mensen sneller vooruit door een enkel onderdeel voor te bereiden, in te plannen, te halen en dat resultaat op zak te hebben, in plaats van alle vier tegelijk te leren en niets te maken. Zitten je missers bij de vragen over lezen en grammatica, begin dan met language arts. Zitten ze bij de vragen over grafieken en data, dan zijn science en social studies waarschijnlijk dezelfde zwakke plek in een ander jasje.
