The myth probably comes from echolocation, the way many bats use sound to find insects in complete darkness. Bats simply use their ears and their eyes together. A fact is something you could confirm from a record, like the date of a fare increase or a ridership count. The other three are judgments: unfair, better and right depend on what a person values. A fact can still be wrong, so ask whether a statement can be checked, not whether you agree with it.
5. Read the passage: The new stadium was supposed to be a triumph. Instead, the roof leaks, the seats are too narrow for most adults, and the parking lot floods whenever it drizzles. The city spent three years and a fortune on a building that, so far, mainly shelters pigeons. Which word best describes the tone of the passage?

An opening phrase like walking to the lab has to be followed by the person who is walking. In the correct choice that person is Priya. In the others the phrase seems to describe the rain or the notes, which cannot walk, and the last choice leaves the phrase dangling at the end.

Last night puts the whole sentence in the past, so both verbs need the simple past: moved and went. Shifting into the present or the future partway through a sentence is one of the shifts the PERT writing test asks you to catch.

Wat de PERT is en wie hem moet maken
De Postsecondary Education Readiness Test, kortweg PERT, is de plaatsingstoets van Florida voor het hoger onderwijs. Scholen van het Florida College System gebruiken hem om te bepalen met welke vakken een nieuwe student begint, bijvoorbeeld Freshman Composition (ENC 1101), Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033) of College Algebra (MAC 1105). Het is geen toets waarvoor je slaagt of zakt en hij telt niet mee voor een cijfer. Een lage score kan betekenen dat je eerst met een voorbereidend vak begint, niet dat je wordt afgewezen.
Er zijn drie aparte toetsen: wiskunde, lezen en schrijven. Elke toets is computeradaptief, dus de vragen worden moeilijker of makkelijker naargelang je eerdere antwoorden, en geen enkele toets heeft een tijdslimiet. Het Florida Department of Education noemt 25 vragen die meetellen per toets, plus 5 testvragen die niet meetellen, en je kunt niet zien welke welke zijn. Een antwoord wijzigen nadat je verder bent gegaan kan niet, en je scores krijg je direct na het insturen. De wiskundetoets geeft bij sommige vragen een rekenmachine op het scherm, geen rekenmachine om vast te houden, dus vraag je testcentrum wat je mee mag nemen.
Niet iedereen hoeft hem te maken. Volgens de wet van Florida hoeft een student geen plaatsingstoets te maken als hij in het schooljaar 2003-04 of later in 9th grade (het negende Amerikaanse schooljaar) op een openbare school in Florida begon en een standaarddiploma van Florida heeft gehaald, of als hij in actieve militaire dienst is. Studenten van scholen buiten Florida of van privéscholen, studenten die thuisonderwijs kregen en studenten met een GED moeten hem meestal wel maken, en colleges mogen andere maten accepteren, zoals SAT- of ACT-scores. Op zijn pagina over plaatsing noemt de staat een norm voor collegeniveau van 106 voor lezen, 103 voor schrijven en 114 voor wiskunde, maar die getallen worden bij regel vastgesteld en zijn eerder veranderd, dus vraag het testcentrum van je college naar de actuele getallen voordat je erop rekent.
Hoe je deze oefentoets gebruikt
De 15 vragen volgen de gepubliceerde vaardighedenlijst van de PERT in het klein. Vraag 1 tot en met 5 gaan over lezen: een gevolgtrekking, een woord in context, het doel van de auteur, feiten scheiden van meningen en de toon. Vraag 6 tot en met 10 gaan over schrijven: bepalingen (modifiers), werkwoordstijden, parallelle zinsbouw, vergrotende trappen en vaak verwisselde woorden. Vraag 11 tot en met 15 zijn algebra: een vergelijking oplossen, een uitdrukking berekenen, een stelsel van twee vergelijkingen, ontbinden in factoren en veeltermen vermenigvuldigen.
De vormen selecteer alles wat van toepassing is en invullen zijn oefenvormen die je dwingen elke optie te bekijken in plaats van te stoppen bij de eerste die goed lijkt. Op de echte toets beantwoord je één vraag tegelijk en kom je er niet op terug, dus oefen die gewoonte ook: lees de hele vraag, kies een antwoord en ga door. Reken de wiskunde eerst op papier uit en kijk dan pas naar de opties.
Lees daarna elke uitleg, ook bij de vragen die je goed had. Gingen de twee vragen over werkwoordstijd en bepalingen allebei fout, dan is dat een grammaticagewoonte om vóór de schrijftoets te herstellen, geen twee losse missers. Gingen de algebravragen langzaam, doe ze dan met de hand opnieuw tot de stappen vanzelf gaan.
