1. Which word is closest in meaning to "candid"?
- A. Hidden
- B. Frank
- C. Careful
- D. Rude
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: B. Frank
Candid means honest and direct, which is what frank means. A candid answer is not necessarily rude, even if it is blunt, and it is the opposite of hidden or evasive. Notice how often an SSAT synonym has a tempting choice that is only loosely connected.
2. Which word is closest in meaning to "ephemeral"?
- A. Eternal
- B. Fragile
- C. Mysterious
- D. Short-lived
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: D. Short-lived
Ephemeral describes something that lasts only a very short time, like a soap bubble or a rainbow. Eternal is the opposite. Fragile means easily broken, which is a different idea even though ephemeral things often are fragile.
3. Complete the analogy.
Drizzle is to downpour as breeze is to _____.
Respuesta: gale
A drizzle is a light rain and a downpour is a very heavy one, so the pair shows the same thing at a gentle level and at an extreme level. A breeze is a gentle wind and a gale is a very strong one. A cloud, an umbrella and a season are related to weather but do not share that gentle-to-extreme link.
4. Chapter is to book as scene is to ___.
- A. Actor
- B. Stage
- C. Play
- D. Curtain
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: C. Play
A chapter is one part of a book, and a scene is one part of a play, so the link is a part and the whole it belongs to. An actor and a curtain are things you find in a theater, and a stage is a place, but none of them is a whole that a scene is part of.
5. Which of the following words are close in meaning to "reluctant"? Select all that apply.
Marca todas las que correspondan.
- A. Eager
- B. Hesitant
- C. Cheerful
- D. Unwilling
- E. Disinclined
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: B. Hesitant, D. Unwilling, E. Disinclined
Reluctant means not wanting to do something, and hesitant, unwilling and disinclined all describe that feeling. Eager is its opposite, and cheerful describes a mood rather than a lack of willingness.
6. Which word is closest in meaning to "meticulous"?
- A. Extremely careful
- B. Messy
- C. Rushed
- D. Moody
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: A. Extremely careful
Meticulous describes someone who pays close attention to every detail, so extremely careful is the best match. Messy and rushed point the other way. When you are unsure of a word, think of where you have seen it, such as a meticulous scientist or a meticulous plan.
7. What is the value of 3(x - 2) + 4 when x = 5?
- A. 9
- B. 11
- C. 13
- D. 15
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: C. 13
Substitute 5 for x to get 3(5 - 2) + 4. Work inside the parentheses first: 5 - 2 is 3. Then multiply, 3 times 3 is 9, and add 4 to get 13. Doing the addition before the multiplication would give a wrong answer.
8. Complete the statement.
A rectangle has a perimeter of 30 and a length of 9. Its width is _____ and its area is _____.
Opciones para el hueco 1: 4, 7, 6, 12
Opciones para el hueco 2: 36, 45, 54, 63
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: 6, 54
The perimeter is twice the length plus twice the width, so 30 = 18 + 2w. That gives 2w = 12 and a width of 6. The area is length times width: 9 times 6 is 54. Both blanks must be right for the question to count.
9. In a class of 24 students, the ratio of boys to girls is 3 to 5. Of the 24, how many are girls?
- A. 15
- B. 9
- C. 12
- D. 18
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: A. 15
The ratio 3 to 5 splits the class into 3 + 5 = 8 equal parts, so each part is 24 divided by 8, which is 3 students. Girls are 5 of the parts: 5 times 3 is 15. The number 9 is the number of boys, the other side of the ratio.
10. Which of the following are perfect squares? Select all that apply.
Marca todas las que correspondan.
- A. 36
- B. 49
- C. 54
- D. 64
- E. 72
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: A. 36, B. 49, D. 64
A perfect square is a whole number multiplied by itself: 36 is 6 times 6, 49 is 7 times 7 and 64 is 8 times 8. The numbers 54 and 72 fall between squares, since 54 sits between 49 and 64 and 72 sits between 64 and 81.
11. Read the passage: "When engineers designed the long footbridge, they expected wind to be the greatest danger. What they had not planned for was the rhythm of walkers. On opening day, thousands crossed together, and their matching footsteps made the deck sway until people grabbed the rails. Weights were later added beneath the deck, and the sway disappeared." What did the engineers fail to anticipate?
- A. Strong wind
- B. The effect of many people walking in step
- C. The cost of the added weights
- D. How many people would come on opening day
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: B. The effect of many people walking in step
The passage says they planned for wind and had not planned for the rhythm of walkers, then explains that matching footsteps made the deck sway. The crowd size is mentioned, but the surprise was how the crowd moved, not how big it was.
12. Read the passage: "Mara had rehearsed the speech for a week, but when she reached the podium her mind went blank. She glanced at the front row, took a slow breath and began with the only line she could remember. By the second paragraph the words were coming back." Which sentence best describes how Mara handled the moment?
- A. She gave up and left the stage.
- B. She read from hidden notes.
- C. She asked the audience for help.
- D. She steadied herself and carried on.
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: D. She steadied herself and carried on.
Mara takes a slow breath and starts with the one line she remembers, and the speech comes back. That is steadying herself and carrying on. The passage never mentions notes, help from the audience or leaving.
13. Complete the sentence.
A test awards 1 point for each right answer, takes away 1/4 point for each wrong answer and ignores blanks. A student answers 20 questions right, 8 wrong and leaves 4 blank. The raw score is _____.
Opciones para el hueco 1: 17, 19, 18, 20
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: 18
The 20 right answers earn 20 points. The 8 wrong answers cost 8 times 1/4, which is 2 points. The 4 blanks change nothing, so the score is 20 minus 2, which is 18. The choice 20 forgets the penalty, and leaving a blank is never worse than a wrong answer under this rule.
14. Which of the following are true of every rectangle? Select all that apply.
Marca todas las que correspondan.
- A. Opposite sides are equal in length
- B. All four sides are equal
- C. All four angles are right angles
- D. The diagonals meet at right angles
- E. Opposite sides are parallel
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: A. Opposite sides are equal in length, C. All four angles are right angles, E. Opposite sides are parallel
Every rectangle has four right angles, equal opposite sides and parallel opposite sides. Equal sides and diagonals that meet at right angles are true only for a square, which is a special rectangle, so neither holds for every rectangle.
15. Read the sentence: "The senator's remarks were deliberately ambiguous, so reporters left the room unsure of her position." As used in the sentence, "ambiguous" most nearly means:
- A. very brief
- B. open to more than one meaning
- C. openly hostile
- D. carefully rehearsed
Ver respuesta y explicación
Respuesta: B. open to more than one meaning
The reporters left unsure of her position, which tells you the remarks could be understood in more than one way. That is what ambiguous means. Use the effect described in the sentence to test each choice: brief, hostile or rehearsed remarks would not leave anyone unsure.
