  1. 1.In a first session, a client asks whether what she says will stay private. Which response is the most accurate?
    • A. Everything you say stays private, and there are never any exceptions to that promise
    • B. What you say stays private, with limits I explain now, such as serious danger and mandated reporting, set by state law
    • C. Privacy only covers what I write down in your file, not what you say aloud
    • D. Privacy is decided case by case by your insurance company, not by me

Respuesta: B. What you say stays private, with limits I explain now, such as serious danger and mandated reporting, set by state law

Informed consent includes the limits of confidentiality, explained before the client discloses anything. Counselors promise privacy and then name the exceptions, such as imminent danger to self or others and mandated reporting of abuse, and those details are set by state law, so they differ by state. Promising absolute secrecy is inaccurate, and confidentiality covers what is said in sessions, not only what is written down. An insurer can ask for information, but it does not set the counselor's duty.

  2. 2.Which situation is the clearest example of a risky dual relationship?
    • A. A counselor and a client both attend the same public lecture and sit in the same audience
    • B. A counselor refers a client to a colleague who is better trained for the client's concern
    • C. A counselor sees a client in a grocery store and lets the client decide whether to say hello
    • D. A counselor starts a business partnership with a current client

Respuesta: D. A counselor starts a business partnership with a current client

A dual relationship means holding a second role with a client, such as friend, employer or business partner. A business partnership with a current client creates a conflict of interest and a power imbalance that can cloud the counselor's judgment and harm the client, so it is to be avoided. Attending a public event, referring out and letting the client lead in a chance encounter are all ordinary and ethical. Not every overlap is avoidable, but counselors must weigh the risk of harm and protect the client.

  3. 3.A counselor realizes that a new client's main concern is outside the counselor's training. Which actions fit sound practice? Select all that apply.

    Marca todas las que correspondan.

    • A. Seek consultation or supervision about the case
    • B. Help the client move to a qualified provider with a planned referral
    • C. Document the decision and the reasoning
    • D. Keep working alone and read about the problem between sessions, since the client chose you
    • E. End the sessions at once without explanation

Respuesta: A. Seek consultation or supervision about the case, B. Help the client move to a qualified provider with a planned referral, C. Document the decision and the reasoning

Counselors practice within their competence. When a case goes beyond it, they seek consultation or supervision, and if the need is still beyond their training, they arrange a referral so the client is not left without care, and they document what was decided and why. Learning on the client's time risks harm, and ending sessions abruptly is abandonment. Competence can sometimes be built with supervision and training, which is why consultation comes first.

  4. 4.A counselor gently opens a conversation about how a client's race, culture or other identities may affect their work together. What is this skill called?
    • A. Broaching
    • B. Reframing
    • C. Linking
    • D. Confrontation

    Respuesta: A. Broaching

Broaching means raising the topic of cultural and identity differences directly and early, rather than waiting for the client to bring it up. It signals openness and helps the alliance. Reframing offers a new way of seeing a problem, linking connects the experiences of group members, and confrontation points out a discrepancy in what the client says or does.

  5. 5.Complete the sentence.

In Erikson's theory, the crisis of adolescence is _____ versus role confusion, and the crisis of young adulthood is _____ versus isolation.

    Respuesta: identity, intimacy

Erikson's fifth stage, adolescence, is identity versus role confusion, where young people work out who they are. The sixth, young adulthood, is intimacy versus isolation, where the task is forming close relationships without losing oneself. Industry versus inferiority belongs to school age, autonomy versus shame to toddlers, trust versus mistrust to infancy, and generativity versus stagnation and integrity versus despair to middle and late adulthood.

  6. 6.A toddler is clearly upset when the caregiver leaves the room, is easily comforted when the caregiver returns, and then goes back to playing. Which attachment pattern is this?
    • A. Insecure-avoidant
    • B. Insecure-ambivalent
    • C. Secure
    • D. Disorganized

    Respuesta: C. Secure

In Ainsworth's work on attachment, a securely attached child protests the separation, seeks contact on return, is soothed quickly and returns to exploring because the caregiver works as a safe base. An avoidant child shows little distress and ignores the caregiver on return, an ambivalent child is hard to soothe and mixes clinging with anger, and a disorganized child shows confused or contradictory behavior.

  7. 7.Complete the sentence.

In Holland's theory, a person who enjoys helping, teaching and counseling others fits the _____ type, and a person who prefers organized data, records and clear procedures fits the _____ type.

Opciones para el hueco 1: Social, Realistic, Enterprising, Investigative

Opciones para el hueco 2: Artistic, Conventional, Realistic, Social

    Respuesta: Social, Conventional

Holland's six types are Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional (RIASEC). Social people are drawn to helping, teaching and counseling. Conventional people like structure, records and following clear procedures. Realistic is hands-on and mechanical, Investigative is analytical and research oriented, Artistic is creative and expressive, and Enterprising is persuasive and leadership oriented.

  8. 8.Which set lists the core conditions Carl Rogers proposed as necessary for therapeutic change?
    • A. Empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence
    • B. Interpretation, transference and insight
    • C. Reinforcement, extinction and shaping
    • D. Confrontation, homework and disputing

Respuesta: A. Empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence

In person-centered counseling, the relationship itself does the work, and Rogers named three conditions the counselor provides: accurate empathic understanding, unconditional positive regard for the client and congruence, meaning genuineness. Interpretation and transference belong to psychodynamic work, reinforcement and extinction to behavioral work, and homework and disputing to cognitive behavioral approaches.

  9. 9.A client says that failing an exam made her worthless. In Ellis's ABC model, which element does a rational emotive behavior therapist mainly dispute?
    • A. The activating event (A), by arguing it did not happen
    • B. The irrational belief about the event (B)
    • C. The consequence (C), by telling her not to feel it
    • D. The client's earliest childhood memories

Respuesta: B. The irrational belief about the event (B)

In REBT, A is the activating event, B is the belief about it and C is the emotional and behavioral consequence. The model says C is driven mainly by B, not by A, so the therapist disputes the rigid, irrational belief ('I must never fail, or I am worthless') and helps the client replace it with a more flexible one. Denying the event or ordering a feeling away does not change the belief, and REBT does not center on childhood memories.

  10. 10.Which of these are stages in the transtheoretical (stages of change) model? Select all that apply.

    Marca todas las que correspondan.

    • A. Precontemplation
    • B. Preparation
    • C. Transference
    • D. Maintenance
    • E. Reinforcement

    Respuesta: A. Precontemplation, B. Preparation, D. Maintenance

The model describes change as moving through precontemplation (not yet considering it), contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. Counselors match the intervention to the stage, for example building awareness early and relapse prevention late. Transference is a psychodynamic concept about feelings projected onto the counselor, and reinforcement is a behavioral principle, not a stage.

  11. 11.In a group, a member says, 'I always thought I was the only one who felt this way.' Which of Yalom's therapeutic factors is this?
    • A. Instillation of hope
    • B. Catharsis
    • C. Imitative behavior
    • D. Universality

    Respuesta: D. Universality

Universality is the relief of finding out that others share your struggles, which reduces shame and isolation. Instillation of hope comes from seeing others improve, catharsis is the release of strong feeling, and imitative behavior is learning by modeling the leader or other members.

  12. 12.A new counseling group is arguing over leadership, with members challenging the leader and each other. Which stage of group development does this describe?
    • A. Forming
    • B. Norming
    • C. Storming
    • D. Adjourning

    Respuesta: C. Storming

In Tuckman's model, groups move through forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. Storming is the stage of conflict, where members push on leadership and compete for position. Forming is the cautious start, norming is when the group settles on shared rules and cohesion grows, and adjourning is the ending. A good leader treats storming as a normal phase to work through, not as a failure.

  13. 13.Complete the sentence.

A test that gives nearly the same score when the same person takes it twice, two weeks apart, shows good _____. Whether the test measures what it claims to measure is called _____.

    Respuesta: reliability, validity

Reliability is consistency of scores, and getting the same result on a retest is test-retest reliability. Validity is whether the test measures the construct it is meant to measure. A test can be reliable without being valid, like a scale that is always five pounds off, but it cannot be valid without being reasonably reliable.

  14. 14.Which statements about norm-referenced test scores are true? Select all that apply.

    Marca todas las que correspondan.

    • A. A score is interpreted by comparing it with the scores of a norm group
    • B. A percentile rank of 70 means the person scored higher than about 70 percent of the norm group
    • C. The norm group should resemble the client for the comparison to be meaningful
    • D. A percentile rank is the percentage of questions the person answered correctly
    • E. A norm-referenced score shows mastery of a specific skill against a fixed standard

Respuesta: A. A score is interpreted by comparing it with the scores of a norm group, B. A percentile rank of 70 means the person scored higher than about 70 percent of the norm group, C. The norm group should resemble the client for the comparison to be meaningful

Norm-referenced scores say where someone stands relative to a reference group, and a percentile rank is a position, not a percent correct. The comparison is only as good as the norm group, so a mismatch in age, culture or background weakens it. Judging mastery against a fixed standard is criterion-referenced testing, which is a different purpose.

  15. 15.Why do researchers randomly assign participants to a treatment group and a waitlist group?
    • A. To increase the number of participants who can take part in the study
    • B. To make the groups comparable on average, so outcome differences more likely reflect the treatment
    • C. To guarantee that the results will apply to every client in every setting
    • D. To make sure that each participant knows which group they were placed in

Respuesta: B. To make the groups comparable on average, so outcome differences more likely reflect the treatment

Random assignment spreads pre-existing differences, such as motivation or severity, across the groups by chance, which supports a causal conclusion about the treatment. It does not add participants and does not by itself make results generalize, which depends on how the sample was selected. Participants are often kept unaware of their group when possible, not told on purpose.
