1.Sieve is to strain as magnet is to:
- A. melt
- B. measure
- C. attract
- D. dissolve
Respuesta: C. attract
Each pair links a tool to its function: a sieve strains solids out of a liquid, and a magnet attracts iron and some other metals. A magnet does not melt, measure or dissolve anything.
2.A drone flies 135 miles in 1.5 hours at a steady speed. At that speed, how far does it fly in 4 hours?
- A. 360 miles
- B. 405 miles
- C. 450 miles
- D. 540 miles
Respuesta: A. 360 miles
Find the rate first: 135 miles divided by 1.5 hours is 90 miles per hour. In 4 hours the drone covers 90 times 4, which is 360 miles. The 405-mile option triples 135, which would be 4.5 hours, not 4.
3.DEARTH most nearly means:
- A. abundance
- B. scarcity
- C. delay
- D. rumor
Respuesta: B. scarcity
A dearth is a lack or shortage, so scarcity is the closest match, as in a dearth of volunteers. Abundance is the opposite. When you do not know a word, try it in a sentence and see which option keeps the meaning.
4.Which expression is the factored form of x^2 - 5x + 6?
- A. (x + 2)(x + 3)
- B. (x - 1)(x - 6)
- C. (x + 1)(x - 6)
- D. (x - 2)(x - 3)
Respuesta: D. (x - 2)(x - 3)
Look for two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to -5: -2 and -3 do both. Expanding (x - 2)(x - 3) gives x^2 - 3x - 2x + 6, which is the original. The (x + 2)(x + 3) option has the right product but the wrong sign on the middle term.
5.Complete the analogy.
A barometer is to pressure as an odometer is to _____.
Respuesta: distance
Each is an instrument paired with the quantity it measures. A barometer measures air pressure and an odometer measures distance traveled. A speedometer measures speed, a fuel gauge shows fuel and a compass shows direction.
6.Read the passage: Forecasts for tomorrow are right far more often than forecasts for ten days out. The atmosphere is a chaotic system, so tiny errors in today's measurements grow as a model runs forward in time. Better satellites and faster computers have pushed useful forecasts somewhat further out, but they have not removed the limit. What is the main idea of the passage?
- A. Satellites have made ten-day forecasts as reliable as one-day forecasts.
- B. Forecasts get less reliable the further ahead they reach, and better tools only partly change that.
- C. Meteorologists disagree about which computer model is best.
- D. Measurement errors can be removed completely with enough data.
Respuesta: B. Forecasts get less reliable the further ahead they reach, and better tools only partly change that.
A main idea has to cover the whole passage: accuracy falls with distance, the reason is growing error, and technology helps but does not remove the limit. The other options contradict the passage or add claims it never makes, such as a debate over models.
7.Which words are closest in meaning to VERBOSE? Select all that apply.
Marca todas las que correspondan.
- A. wordy
- B. terse
- C. long-winded
- D. vague
- E. silent
Respuesta: A. wordy, C. long-winded
Verbose describes speech or writing that uses more words than it needs, so wordy and long-winded both fit. Terse is the opposite, using very few words. Vague means unclear, which is a different problem, and silent means no speech at all.
8.A unit's monthly fuel allowance of 8,000 gallons is cut by 15 percent. The next month the reduced amount is raised by 10 percent. What is the allowance after both changes?
- A. 6,800 gallons
- B. 7,200 gallons
- C. 7,480 gallons
- D. 7,600 gallons
Respuesta: C. 7,480 gallons
Apply each change to the amount at that moment. A 15 percent cut leaves 85 percent of 8,000, which is 6,800. A 10 percent raise on 6,800 adds 680, giving 7,480 gallons. The 7,600 option treats the changes as a net 5 percent cut of the original, but percentages applied one after another do not simply add, and 6,800 forgets the raise.
9.Complete the sentence.
The interior angles of a hexagon add up to _____ degrees.
Opciones para el hueco 1: 540, 720, 900, 1080
Respuesta: 720
A polygon with n sides can be cut into n minus 2 triangles, and each triangle adds up to 180 degrees. A hexagon has 6 sides, so 4 triangles: 4 times 180 is 720. The 540 option is the pentagon total, and 1080 is the octagon total.
10.Read the passage: When the base switched from paper checklists to a tablet app, the maintenance crew expected faster inspections. In the first month, average inspection time rose by about ten minutes, mostly because crews were still learning where each item lived in the app. By the third month, times had dropped below the old average, and fewer steps were missed. Which conclusion is best supported by the passage?
- A. The app was a mistake and should be dropped.
- B. Paper checklists caused most missed steps because they were too long.
- C. New technology always makes inspections slower.
- D. The slowdown was temporary and tied to learning the new tool.
Respuesta: D. The slowdown was temporary and tied to learning the new tool.
The passage ties the first-month slowdown to learning where items live in the app, and times later fell below the old average, so the slowdown was temporary. Nothing says why paper checklists missed steps, and always goes far beyond what one base's experience can show.
11.ABATE most nearly means:
- A. to lessen
- B. to repeat
- C. to confirm
- D. to hide
Respuesta: A. to lessen
To abate is to grow less intense, as when a storm abates. Repeat, confirm and hide do not describe a drop in strength.
12.Which of the following equal one fourth? Select all that apply.
Marca todas las que correspondan.
- A. 0.25
- B. 2/6
- C. 25 percent
- D. 3/12
- E. 0.4
Respuesta: A. 0.25, C. 25 percent, D. 3/12
0.25 is 25 hundredths, which is one fourth, and 25 percent means 25 out of 100, the same value. 3/12 reduces to 1/4. 2/6 reduces to 1/3, and 0.4 is two fifths.
13.Sonnet is to poetry as sonata is to:
- A. instrument
- B. concert
- C. composer
- D. music
Respuesta: D. music
A sonnet is one form of poetry and a sonata is one form of music, so the relationship is example to category. A sonata is played on an instrument and written by a composer, but those are different relationships from the one in the stem.
14.Read the passage: Sleep researchers have found that memory for new material improves when a person sleeps soon after learning it. In one study, volunteers learned a list of word pairs in the evening. Those who slept that night recalled more pairs the next morning than those who stayed awake and were tested after the same number of hours. The researchers cautioned that the study was small and that recall may also depend on how the words were learned. Which statements does the passage support? Select all that apply.
Marca todas las que correspondan.
- A. Staying awake improves memory for word pairs.
- B. Sleeping after learning was linked to better recall in this study.
- C. Every person needs eight hours of sleep to remember new words.
- D. The researchers noted that the study was small.
- E. Recall may also depend on how the words were learned.
Respuesta: B. Sleeping after learning was linked to better recall in this study., D. The researchers noted that the study was small., E. Recall may also depend on how the words were learned.
The passage reports better recall after sleep, says the researchers cautioned that the study was small and says recall may depend on how the words were learned. It never mentions eight hours, and the awake group did worse, so the first option reverses the finding.
15.Complete the sentence.
A crew paints 3/5 of a hangar wall in 6 hours at a steady pace. Painting the whole wall at that pace takes _____ hours.
Opciones para el hueco 1: 8, 9, 10, 12
Respuesta: 10
If 3/5 of the wall takes 6 hours, then 1/5 takes 2 hours, so the whole wall takes 5 times 2, which is 10 hours. Dividing 6 by 3/5 gives the same result.
